house in the 'hood

I can't believe this year is coming to a close.
What a year it has been!
If you've been around here for a while you'll know
2016 was a HUGE year of changes for me,
both personal and professional.
I've worked hard at it from both angles,
I've learned a lot,
and I have to say
I'm excited to do more of both in 2017.
Thank you for sticking with me through this rollercoaster of life.
I appreciate you more than words can say.
Now back to regular programming...

gifts that keep on giving

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas.
We definitely did.
The biggest hit was a snap circuit toy for my youngest...
all the boys fell in love with it and have spent hours building new inventions.
Its the gift that keeps on giving.
Today they built a working radio.
Maybe one will go into engineering.
You can tell that I'm trying really hard
to let go of my old ocd perfectionist ways...
all their new gear is piled up on the sofas and all over the floor.
I told myself it could stay until the weekend.
Whenever I feel anxious about the mess
I remind myself that
one day I'm going to miss the mess.
The memories are in the mess making.

regifting Christmas

Growing up I remember being told
that certain things you don't talk about
in polite conversation...
religion and politics being the big two.
Fair warning...I might just mention both today.
Click away if you must.
I wish you well and have a great day.
If not, let's see where this thought takes us.

words I live by

I shared this story on instagram last week
so if you follow me there
sorry for the repeat.
To me it's worth the re-run
in case someone needs this like I once did...

words to live by...courtesy of target

It's me.
Are you still there?
I'm here.
It's been nearly a month since I checked in.
Not that I haven't logged in to post.
I'd just stare at the screen,
not sure what to say,
but having a whole host of things I want to share.
Lots of stuff going on...I'm sure with you too.
I wasn't sure how to dive back in.
Here goes...

a range of gift ideas

How is it that Thanksgiving is two weeks from today?
I feel like its still October.
Anybody else feel behind in the times?
With the holidays looming
I thought I'd start posting some gift ideas
for those you love and even maybe those you don't...
ha! tis the season to be nice after all.

Round Top round up

In a post that falls under the "better late than never" category
herewith is the pictorial story of our fall trip to Round Top...

what is it?

I felt compelled to post again about
my favorite kitchen gadget...

Looking at the picture you may be wondering
what is it?
btw...random useless trivia here...
anyone else remember that the mascot of the '96 Atlanta Olympics
was first named "whatizit?" then got shortened to just "izzy"?
I think that was the only time
I've ever been embarrassed to be from Georgia.
What were they thinking?
Anywho...back to my original thought process...

favorite things for five bucks

You can't buy much these days for five bucks.
But I found a new to me product
and that got me to thinking...
what are some five dollar favorites?
Well...I found five....

daring greatly

I hope this isn't the case
but beware that this is yet another Brene Brown post.
She did it again.
Made me want to shout her praises again.
Because just last week I emailed my peep Holly
about my favorite quote from Brene's "Daring Greatly" book.
{It's actually a quote by Theodore Roosevelt
but Brene made me love it.}
I emailed Holly to see if she knew where I could get
a "pretty" version of the quote because you know
I'm a sucker for cool fonts and quote boxes.
Holly is such a doll.
She said if we can't find one, we could make our own.
I know.
She's my tribe and as talented as the day is long.

the skin I'm in...still the one{s}

By now you know I'm a self-professed beauty product junkie.
If that is wrong I don't want to be right.
A dear friend of mine knows how I roll in this department
and recently asked what new stuff I was using.
I'm pretty sure I surprised her and myself
when I said not much.
I've kind of gotten into what I think is a pretty good routine.
My skin is really behaving since I cut out wheat.
{Although I admit with my kids birthday,
then my own earlier this week
I fell off the wheat wagon and indulged in
some heavy carb loading...
nearly bordering on gluttonous inhalation
of buttery bread and birthday cake
like both were going out of style.
But its back on the saddle again,
which both sucks and is good for me at the same time.}
If only I could get gravity to cooperate
and stop pulling parts of me down
I'd be all good. Ha!
Since I can't fight gravity
I try to fight wrinkles with a few things...

boho bedding

I'm happy, no, make that ecstatic
that it really and truly feels like fall here.
Leaves are even falling off the trees.
{Although that could be the record heat too. Ha!}
October is absolutely my favorite month of the year.
Truly if we could keep it like this all year I would.
Not sure if that has anything to do with the fact
that since I turned 30 {mumbling} years ago
I celebrate the entire month of October
not just my birthday.
If that's wrong I don't want to be right. Ha!
BTW...a very happy belated birthday to Mary Ann.
October babies rock ;)
Whether its your birthday or not
I hope this month is treating you well so far.

Somehow, well, I know how but its a truly long story,
one I'm sure I'll write about here soon,
somehow I started updating a couple of rooms in our home.
Three bathrooms.
That turned into three baths and a couple of bedrooms.
Because that's the way my brain works.
Domino decisions y'all.
No pretty before and afters...yet.
Stay tuned for that.
But I thought I'd share some cool boho bedding I've found
in case you're looking to do some updating yourself.

It started with this print...

Holly Mathis pop-up shop

It feels like fall y'all.
Besides the glorious weather that rolled in this morning
{and by glorious I mean non-sauna like conditions}
it also means its time for Round Top.
You can see previous posts on the antique mecca here and here.
Twice in the past week I've stopped just before getting to Round Top,
instead heading into the beautiful, bucolic Brenham, Texas.
Better known for being the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream
it also has the most charming little downtown area
where my sweet friend Holly Mathis
has turned part of her work/office space into a retail shop!
She has a cool collection of home decor items
from small {candles, books, decorative tchotchkes}
to large {chairs, benches, painted hutches}
and every size in between {pillows, wall art}.
Don't take my word for it though.
You know me.
I have an iphone and I'm not afraid to use it...

I thought I'd start this week with a Monday post
but here it is Wednesday.
I would say "how'd that happen?" as in
how there's not enough time in the day
but honestly all hell broke loose in our 'hood on Monday.

house in the 'hood

Hope your week is going well.
Not sure how it's already Thursday.
The week started off on a slow roll
until my painter texted me out of the blue
to say he had time to do some projects
I'd mentioned to him before.
The ones I'd casually talked about
but hadn't actually planned.
{insert wide eyed emoji here}
Which is why you've heard zilch from me until now.
Three bathrooms now torn apart
but painted all pretty,
one ready for wallpaper.
The wallpaper I haven't picked yet.
Not complaining.
Just saying everyone in my house is looking at me
like when's the house going to be put back together and finished.
Put back together?
Asap I promise.
I'm working on it.
{That's my version of an evil/goofy laugh ;)}
As my friend Holly texted me last week
"our homes are our laboratories"
where we try out new colors and finishes,
and get our decorating groove on.
Some people cook,
others craft or sew...
my creative outlet is decorating,
or serial {re-}decorating as the case may be.
If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.
One of the places I get my inspiration from is
perusing homes for sale here in Houston
on the world's best real estate site

What started out as me saving my favorites to my desktop
turned into my most popular series feature
I get so many ideas for my "laboratory" and I hope you do too.
Herewith my favorite for this week...

You don't see many bungalows getting saved around here anymore.
Sad but true, more often that not,
these little gems get knocked down in favor
of building big, bigger, or the biggest {home}...
this is Texas after all.
I knew as soon as I saw the facade below it was going to be good.

I just didn't realize how good.
You may want to grab a drink and take a seat first.
I'll give you time.
Go ahead.
Settle in...

favorite finds

You may have heard me use the term
"domino decisions" as in
one decorating decision that leads to another.
What started out with a giant turtle shell
led to new light fixtures for my kids' rooms.
{Yes, that would be plural...more on that later}
Until the electrician shows up next week to install them.
Then the hubs will know its for realz.
The good news is that I finally figured out where to hang
the chippy green industrial light fixture
I found in Round Top a few trips ago.
Sometimes it takes me a while y'all.
I find things I love and then hold onto them until
I figure out where to put them.
I know.
That's probably the same excuse hoarders use, right?
Some call it hoarding, I prefer the term "collector."
No matter what you call it,
I'm happy to say that last night
whilst in the midst of some decorating domino decisions
I stumbled onto the fall collection for Nate Berkus at Target.
Herewith my favorites...

new 'do

I'll start off by addressing the obvious.
I gave my blog a little makeover.
How do you like it?
Seriously. I'd like to know.
As in do me a favor and leave a comment below.
Pretty please with a cherry on top?

Seriously if you only knew
how many "new blog" links
I've saved to my desktop you might say:

"Nancy, step away from the keyboard.
You need help. Plus its about to explode."

Let's talk fall

I don't know about you
but I get stacks of catalogs in the mail every day,
at least ten a day.
I usually keep one or two to flip through
then recycle the rest.
I almost threw away the most recent one from Chico's.
The reason I didn't is that I noticed Elaine Irwin on the cover.
For those of you without useless knowledge in your brain like me,
she is John {Cougar} Mellencamp's ex-wife.
And yes, I am available for phone-a-friend calls
if you're ever on a game show
where you need fast access to said useless knowledge.
Now I don't know if I've ever bought anything from Chico's
but after seeing their fall catalog I'm thinking
that might be about to change.
Herewith my favorite picks...

forgetting is not an option

You probably did the same thing I did this morning.
I started remembering where I was,
fifteen Septembers ago.
Where were you when the world stopped turning?
My heart seized at the mere thought.

high versus my {greek key mirror}

way back when in 2011.
It's thrilling for me to find the look for less when it comes to decorating.
The truth is I've been a decor detective for most of my adult life.
I'm sure it has a lot to do with seeing my parents
rebuild their lives
after a house fire destroyed everything we owned
when I was a little girl, eight years old to be exact.
My parents would buy second hand furniture
or bring home items people tossed on the curb
and fix them up with paint and elbow grease.
The true definition of the saying
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."

house in the 'hood

Happy day after Labor Day!
Hope you had a relaxing weekend.
We spent part of ours decluttering
{which for OCD people like me is relaxing}
and the rest of the weekend celebrating my husband's birthday.
More on that another day.
Let's start this week off with a house in the 'hood...

Friday, September 2, 2016

Call me crazy
but I started another 40 bags clean out
to celebrate the start of the school year.
I usually do it as a part of Lent
but it feels like
we turned into hoarders over the summer,
stuffing things in drawers and closets
to avoid seeing daily clutter
so its time to organize and let go of things.
Plus because I love to multi task
I've rearranged three rooms in the house.
As in move furniture.
By myself.
The hubs was not pleased
because he made me promise to help him
move his desk back to the other side of the room tonight.
Apparently he doesn't share my vision for his space.
Insert rolling eyes emoji here.

Friday, August 26, 2016

I just signed up for another Brene Brown e-course.
Because I'll shout it off roof tops til the day I die...
her "Living Brave" semester changed my life
and I'm hoping her new parenting class does the same...

sometimes you snooze, you lose

When I first saw this suzani on
a few weeks ago
I thought it was beyond lovely
and just perfect for the foot of my new bed...

Tuesday, August 23, 2016

Did you hear that?
Neither did I.
You know why?
Back to school time baby.
I love my crew to the moon and back
but I'm loving the feeling that comes
after you fix them breakfast,
make a bag lunch for them,
then slow roll it through the drop off line.
Its called peace and quiet and I haven't had any for three months.
Can I get a high five?

southern state of mind

While we were booking the trip to Disney last month
I said sheepishly said to the hubs...
you know, if we're in Florida,
we may as well rent a car
and drive up to Savannah.
Surprisingly he agreed.
Well, not so surprisingly really.
He knows how much I love my dad
and how I cry at the thought
that every time I see him
it will be the last time.

Disney or bust

then you'll know we took a little vacay
to the east coast recently.
We weren't planning on another trip this summer
But then somehow over the long July 4th weekend
my husband started mentioning Disney World.
Secretly I think he wanted to go,
having grown up in a family that worshiped loved WDW.
He tells fond memories of how his family would drive to Orlando,
then stay in their pop-up camper for two weeks
while going to WDW every day.
Don't think me a snob but that ain't my idea of a holiday.
My idea of roughing it is staying at a Holiday Inn.
Thankfully he knows his wife's limits.
He mentioned that while camping they would always pass by
one of the original Disney resorts, the Polynesian.
Now we're talking!
I could tell by his smile when he was talking
that he really wanted to go
but what's weird is that he is a planner.
As in he's already talking about next year's summer vacation.
So for him to say "hey, let's go somewhere next month" is truly unusual.
Without hesitation I said "Book it Danno!"
{if you're under, say, 45 then that line went right over your head ;)
if so, google the 70's series Hawaii 5-0}
And so we did.

house in the 'hood

When my husband and I were first dating
I would fly here for the weekend
and one of our favorite things to do
would be to drive around to look at real estate.
I remember my husband would always say...
now listen, don't fall in love with any thing here
because we can't afford any thing in this 'hood.
Good news for him is that I didn't listen.
Not a lot has changed...

well, the convertible is now a minivan
and we still stalk real estate
but more times than not
its virtually, through my favorite
{and the best}
real estate website
Herewith my latest favorite house in the 'hood...

cleaning house

That's what I've been doing all week.
Moving furniture and cleaning house.
I would show you the pictures but you might dump me.
I sent them to the hubs though.
With the line "look what your children did..."
because their always "his" when they do something nuts.

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

lighting look for less

You know I love playing the look for less game.
That's how I got my nickname {and the name of my business} after all.
I'm finishing up a source list for a client design board
and was tickled to find this for $249 ...

{or less when you find a coupon code}

I don't know about you
but I'd take the extra money and run...
right back out shopping. ;)

musical beds {bedding edition}

When last we left off
we were awaiting the arrival of our new box spring
so that we could continue the game of musical beds.
{Here's the low profile one we bought...
perfect for today's taller mattresses
and since you put it together yourself
its easy to carry upstairs
rather than fight trying to get a regular king sized up a stairwell.
Just saying ;).}
Our old queen bed moved into the room our youngest rarely slept in.
We asked our crew who, if anyone, wanted to make that their room.
Very smartly twin B {my mini-me} said that he would.
I say smart because down the road when they all want their own rooms,
and I'm pretty sure that WILL be the case,
then his new room will have its own private bath
while the other two bedrooms share a jack and jill bath.
I told my husband I think this could qualify for a snooze you lose
kind of moment that I know will come back up for discussion in later years
as in "why do I have to share a bathroom with HIM????"
or "why can't I have my own bathroom like HIM????"
In the spirit of fairness I told them all that I would redo their bedrooms,
maybe switch around some furniture, paint the walls, and buy new bedding.
I know.
I bet I'm thinking what you're thinking too.
I'm a serial redecorator the best mom EVER. :)

sleeping like a baby

To continue where we last left off,
its week three of the virus from hell...
but who's counting?
The hubs that's who.
He's had enough of being one superwoman down around here.
Three new prescriptions later and I think I'll make it.
I'm getting my energy back and getting stuff done.
I had a mammogram and ultrasound on Monday
to check out that lump I mentioned last week.
I'm clean y'all.
For another year any way.
I'll take it.
A special shout out to my peep Laura
who texted me just after I left my house
for my appointment Monday morning.
She was outside my house ready to take me to my appointment.
I tried to tell her I'd go alone
but honestly
she made me forget about what I was there for,
telling me stories from her recent trip to Europe,
chaperoning her son and other middle school kids
through France and Germany.
I'm taking notes...
Make sure my kids take foreign language as an elective.
Believe you me.
I'll make it known:
Need chaperone?
Will travel ;)
Now you take a note from me...
schedule your annual physical
including mammogram today
and do monthly breast exams.
No excuses.
Thank you.

Another reason I'm sleeping so well lately
is that our new bed arrived.

Would you believe me if I told you
that I'm still coughing up a lung?
Its been two weeks and I'm over this.
I'll admit I was hard headed.
It took me til day six to go to the doctor.
Even then it was a fluke.

house in the 'hood

Really this is a house in [another] 'hood...
one close by called Tanglewood
Since its a stunner
{and I'm barely surviving a lovely summer cold}
I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.
Let's start with my favorite room of the whole house...

permission slips {what I learned from COURAGEworks}

I know its been a few weeks since I posted.
Don't think though that I haven't sat down every day to write here.
Because I have.
But like most times when something is on my heart,
I have to let it sit for a while.
But I told myself I wouldn't post again until I wrote this one.

out and about...dash houston

While we were in Round Top a few weeks back
we noticed some signs for Dash Houston
a bi-annual home decor market pop up shop.
We marked it on the calendar but as time got closer
the gang realized the only way we could go
was on the afternoon of the designer only preview.
Everyone looked at me,
with the declaration that I was going to start a business of my own.
Its funny how the universe works sometimes.
You put it out there and, if it's meant to be,
things start falling into place.
Dash isn't the only reason but
it was like adding a few more logs to the fire...
I trucked on down to the county clerk's office,
filed the business paperwork I needed,
and dream became a reality.
{Thanks Sharon for patiently explaining to me
the ins and outs of starting a business in the great state of Texas ;)
and to my sister Julie who advised me on tax implications...
I got my legal on and became "official" :)
So I emailed Dash then promptly held my breath
to see if they'd bar the door to newbie me.
Happily I got an email back: Access granted!
We were in!
When we arrived we were greeted at the door
with the offer of a glass of wine.
Right there I knew I'd found more of my tribe...

musings on a Monday

Hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day weekend.
Saturday was fantastic, yesterday not so much
but let's not get into that.
Let's focus on the positive...

house in the 'hood

Yesterday was our wedding anniversary.
Fourteen years.
It hasn't always been easy but it has definitely been worth it.
My husband is a gem, a treasure and honestly is better than I deserve.
In the spirit of gratitude and blessings of marriage and couple hood
I'm going to do a special house in the 'hood today...
a two for Thursday ;)
as in not one but two house in the 'hoods...

Friday, April 29, 2016

It's Friday and I'm in love...

Hope your week has been as productive as mine.
My dear friend and partner in DIY crime came over yesterday
and together we figured out how to hang wallpaper.
As in neither one of us had ever done it before.
If the adventures of Lucy and Ethel pop in your mind
as you read that, well, you wouldn't be too far off base.
At one point Rena was laying on her tummy on top of my washer.
I wanted so badly to grab my phone and take a quick pic
but meanwhile I found my elbow wedged between the wall and said washer
while the rest of my arm was glued to the wall.
Rena was able to grab the long level and pry my arm free.
She is the lady to call for any and all DIY adventures I'm telling you.
Remember too that she's the one that plans gorgeous Greek weddings. :)
I think it turned out beautifully if I do say so myself...

a few for FriYay

I know.
Another week just FLEW by.
Lots going on around here,
all of it very exciting.
Hope to share details soon.
Not to use that as a tease but
I figure a short post is better than nothing
and "the details" is a long one.
I'll just say that
when you put stuff out in the universe
and it's the path you're meant to be on
then the universe has a way of lining up
to make things happen.

blue and white lovers rejoice

I'm not sure how it happened but
I stumbled on to Katie Kime recently.
She had me at hello with this shift dress...

house in the 'hood

Trust me when I say
stop what you're doing.
Now go get a cup of coffee while I wait here.
Got it?
Sit down and get comfortable.
Stretch your fingers and your hands.
Now get your pin finger ready
for this week's house in the 'hood...

what up Wednesday

I know I owe you a part two of Round Top.
I'll get there I promise.
In the meantime here's a few of my favorite things
that I've been meaning to tell you...

Friday, April 1, 2016

Round Top round up

Get a cup of coffee and cop a squat, this is a picture heavy post...
You may remember last week this little tease I made on picmonkey...

Yes, last week my tribe of decor treasure-hunter friends and I
loaded up and headed out for our bi-annual
shop til you drop then tailgate road trip
to the mecca for people like us known as Round Top.
I don't know about everybody else but when we turn off Highway 290
and see this I get a little giddy....

the way it is now

I didn't think I'd write about this again.
I wrote this on Saturday but walked away from it
without hitting publish.
Today it feels like I just have to.
So here goes...

what's up Wednesday

I don't know about you but I'm amazed at how quickly this week is blowing by.
We survived spring break from school last week.
Insert high five emoji here.
We enjoyed a staycation here in Houston
and did little to next to nothing
{which is perfect in my humble opinion}.
Unfortunately I'm two lessons and four chapters behind
in my courageworks class but I'll get there.
More on that in another post that I've been writing in my head.
It's good y'all.
Not my writing, but the guts of it.
I'm learning and growing where it counts.
I feel it in my bones but more importantly in my heart.
I fell down for a minute after someone hurt my feelings
but baby, let me tell you -
instead of giving up
I chose to use what I've been learning in class
and I moved past it.
It still stings when I think about it but
I'm rising strong and proud of it.
So instead of thinking of what I didn't get done
I'm choosing to look at what I have accomplished this week...

life lessons in one song

First off I'd like to wish my sister and her husband
{who is truly like the brother I never had}
a very happy anniversary.
They celebrated twenty years of marriage this week.
Marriage is hard work even between two perfect partners
and these two are exactly that.
Congratulations and here's to many more happy years. ;)
I hope its ok to share that he planned and saved for over a year
to surprise her with a new wedding band and upgraded engagement ring
since they were young and broke fiscally challenged
when they first got married.
I know.
He's a keeper especially because he knows how lucky he is to have her :)
Happy Anniversary to you two lovebirds.
{Can't wait to see y'all in June.}

Some of you may know that I love country music.
As a matter of fact around the time I started this blog
my favorite tune at the time {and to this day} was

house in the 'hood

I have a hard time believing that this house in the 'hood
hasn't been snapped up yet.
It better sell quickly or Houston we might have a problem.
{And by Houston I mean my husband.}
Herewith my favorite house in our 'hood for this week...

powder puff

I'll be honest.
When zipper lady thought I was in my thirties the other night
immediately I thought it must have been my hair...
because I strategically had it cut, colored, and styled the afternoon of the wedding.
I ain't no dummy y'all...
I like to plan ahead :)
So as I'm sitting there in the chair waiting for the dye to do its thing
I started perusing pinterest and chatting away with my hip hairstylist Marie...

my first big beautiful Greek wedding

Hope y'all are having a fantastic start to the week.
Over the weekend my friend Rena's daughter Kara got married
in THE most beautiful wedding I've ever attended.
I'd never been to a Greek wedding before
and I have to say that for future weddings
the bar is now set incredibly high...

house in the 'hood

This house in the 'hood
is not in our actual 'hood like my regular series
but rather in what we think of
as our future neighborhood,
Palmetto Bluff, SC.
In case you've never heard of it
its a community near both
Bluffton and Hilton Head, SC.
Its a magical place to say the least.
I can't explain it but its true.
I think most people find their way
to the real estate office before the end of their first trip to PB.
If you ever go don't say I didn't warn you. ;)
We came close to buying a second home there this past summer,
like this {} close...
but that's another story for another day.
Today let's enjoy this house in the 'hood
from near where I come from...

my {not so new} favorite place to shop...

Hope you all had a happy weekend.
We definitely did.
We went to The Sound of Music
then had dinner with some framily.
{friends who have become family to us.}
If you're in Houston and hear someone randomly belt out
"A few of my favorite things" or
"Climb Every Mountain"
chances are it will be me or one my kids.
Highly recommend.
The musical.
Not my singing :)

what up buttercup?

Once again the week has gotten away from me.
Let's run down the week shall we?
I've come to think of Mondays as "Maintenance Mondays" -
and no I'm not talking about manis/pedis and haircuts.
Mondays are used to clean up the tornado left by four boys over the weekend.
I'm talking dishes, groceries, and laundry.
Mountains of laundry.
Boring but crucial to keeping our ship afloat :)
Tuesdays are all about cleaning and tidying
and little projects around here.
Last week it was a little front yard makeover.
This week I managed to get a shower enclosure installed
in the kids bathroom because apparently
the shower curtain only stays closed
when I personally open and shut it.
Otherwise there are puddles all over the floor.
No bueno.

three things Thursday

Anybody else wondering where the week has gone?
I blinked and its Thursday.
Before I get to sharing some of my favorite recent finds
I want to say thank you for your kind comments
and private emails that you sent
after my last post about jumping in spite of over fear.
As I dig deeper into Daring Greatly its like one ah-ha moment after another.
Especially when it comes to self doubt and self compassion.
I'm working on a post about what I'm figuring out
but until then let's just delve into something fun shall we?
Herewith three recent finds that make me happy...

the biggest DIY of my life

I'll admit I got into real funk around the holidays.
I did.
Not gonna lie.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are usually my faves.
Not last year.
Life happened last year.
It sucks and its real but there's no changing it.
Then suddenly the new year came and my heart felt lighter
and I got this feeling like
let's get 'er done.

house in the 'hood

I admit I haven't been stalking listings on my beloved lately.
You may remember that we decided after the losses in our family
last spring to stay where we were planted
while our hearts were healing.
I didn't stop intentionally but my heart just wasn't in it.
Until recently ;)
Even my husband, my partner in real estate stalking,
is mentioning new houses and empty lots.
I've told him not to tease unless he's serious.
Because you KNOW I would jump at the bit
to design and build a dreamy new home.
Until then I'm back to looking for ideas.
Herewith is my favorite house in the 'hood...
its sale pending but we can look and dream any way...

This kitchen had me at hello.
I'd never leave this kitchen.
I wouldn't.
I'd just sit and stare all day.
What's not to love?

current state of mind

Not sure if I told you this before
but my husband and I -
we're big nerds.
So much so that every year end
we write down goals for the new year.
We may not make the deadline exactly
but slowly but surely we get stuff done.
Except this year we only talked about a list.
As in we need to write our list.
But honestly I think my husband said it all
when he declared to the kids and I
that this year,
was going to be all about thankfulness.

three things I'm obsessed with

You know I'm a sucker for a little hint of leopard print,
particularly when it comes on a shoe.
I saw these before the break while I was shopping for gifts
and they may have found their way into my cart.

gray hair dont care

I've ranted and raged about how I've been going gray for far too long.
Since I was a teenager.
Weird but true.
Gotta love genetics.
I started getting my hair professionally dyed in my twenties.
Depending on my hairstylist the colors have varied.
I've destroyed most photographic proof of the crazy colors its been.
Not sure what I was thinking at the time.
If at all ;)
There was a long while where I stopped having it "done" at a salon.
I'd buy a box of whatever at the grocery and do it myself.
Ten bucks and done.
Love it!
I still do it but I admit I need some help.
Sadly my arms are no longer Gumby like to reach the back of my head
and my eyes can't always see where the dye needs to go.
Well, that and I can't keep up with the grays.
There's too many.
My lovely hairstylist Marie guesstimated that if I stopped coloring
I would be seventy percent gray.
Whatchoo talkin' about Willis?
Now I love women with gray hair.
I do.
But I'm not ready to leave my brown hair behind just yet.
I have Marie touch up my roots every month or so.
Then about two or three weeks after she does it
I wake up and suddenly it would seem
there's a raccoon staring back at me in the morning mirror
with a big gray racing stripe down the part in my hair.
Anybody else?
Here's where I do one of two things...
grab a bottle of hair dye
or use a temporary wash out color stick of some sort.
I was telling Marie about my dye dilemmas,
kind of cautiously,
since I didn't want to offend her.
She just laughed and suggested I try a product she'd heard about from a friend.
I put it on my list of things to do.
A few days later Marie called and sweetly said
she'd picked up a can for me to try.
I know!
She's a doll and boy am I glad she did.
This stuff is the bom-diggity...

You spray it on like hair spray.
Best part is not only does it cover your gray
it seriously makes you look like you have more hair.
Ladies of a certain age - you know what I'm talking about.
Under 40s you may not get this but over 40? -> I got your back!
Just like eyebrow hair tends to become sparse
so might the hair on your head.
This spray is like magic in a can.
I've haven't tried their other products
but if they are anything like Root Concealer I'm sold!

what's new

I don't know about you
I for one
am beyond ecstatic
to leave last year behind.
See ya.
Buh-bye 2015!
Welcome 2016.
I've got a new attitude :)
Let's do this...

Santa found us and the boys were beyond thrilled.
I let go of my OCD and let everything,
every book, every toy, every game
sit wherever it found its resting spot,
to remain for a week.
I looked at light sabers poking out from under the sofas
and hot wheels raceways attached to the breakfast table
and would halfway roll my eyes,
knowing that one day I'll miss the chaos.
So I just let it be.
That was work y'all.
Resisting the urge to tidy.
We spent New Years Day decluttering
and gathering things to donate to a friends' sister
who works with a refugee group here in Houston.
That's one of our themes for the new year...
letting go...
keeping only what we love and use
or finding a new home for things we know
could be used better by others.
I can't wait for 40 bags in 40 days.
Would it be wrong to start before Lent?
Maybe I'll do a double dose?
We'll see.
I'm just ready to lighten up with less stuff.
In the meantime
I'm happy to report that all holiday décor is put away.
High five and Holla!
The holiday break from school and activities was long but perfect.
It was bittersweet sending them to school today
but who's kidding who?
I'm ready to get stuff done around here.
First up a little laundry room reno is in the works.
Its been on our to do list for years.
I think in 2016 we just might make it a reality :)
What about you?
What are your goals for this year?
